IRB Training

TBSLSC operate two 5 metre Arancia inshore rescue boats (IRB's). These are very versatile boats and are used for preventative patrols as well as rescue work.

The driver and crew are always qualified lifeguards and undertake advanced training to effect rescues that are often within the surf environment or close to rocks, piers and other dangers.

The training will include bringing the boat alongside casualty in heavy surf, but some times the boat can not get that close, so the crew is trained to swim to casualty and recover back to the IRB. This can be very challenging for both the rescue swimmer, but also the driver who then manages the IRB on their own in heavy surf.

We use Ness rocks to practice these skills; a heavy tide running from the river and the position of the rocks means we would manoeuvre the IRB close to the rocks and then the crew dive from the boat and swim to the casualty with a rescue tube. The IRB will be positioned as close to the rocks as they can get and will recover casualty and swimmer back to the IRB as soon as they can.

Our boat also provides safety cover at sea based events such as long distance swimming as triathlons.
